Understand how biological molecules are essential to the survival of living organisms.
There are four major biological molecules: proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. Each one has a very important role in how you and every other living thing function and survive. We will talk about the roles of each individually and how they compare to each other and work together to get stuff done.
Nucleic Acids - Large, complex molecules made up of smaller molecules called nucleotides. A nucleotide is composed of a five carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogen base. Nucleic acids store and transmit information in the form of a code. The two most important nucleic acids are DNA and RNA. Both of these are found in every organism. DNA codes genetic information.

Proteins - Large molecules with smaller subunits called amino acids. Proteins have several functions. Proteins can be used for structure, transportation of materials, directing the functions of certain body parts as hormones, catalyzing reactions as enzymes, and several other important jobs.
Everybody relies on these organic molecules to live. Understanding how they work is important to maintaining a healthy life style. |
